It’s a strange thing to say, I know, but I do consider myself a bob expert. I spend my days searching at bob inspiration and quizzing experts on the current trends yet I’ve never had a bob myself. There are so many wonderful bob hair trends out there but one thing that has constantly put me off getting the chop is the thought that I wouldn’t be able to arrange my hair into an up do anymore. I am really lazy when it comes to my hair regimen, so I am always rocking sleek buns and ponytails to help me look more put together. I adore the look of a bob hairstyle, but the worry of not being able to accomplish this kept me out of the salon chair.
But after scrolling through some of the most trendy women’s Instagram pages I found there are actually loads of chic ways to wear your short hair up. Since I write about bob hair trends every week, I like to consider myself an authority on them, so I figured I’d make a round up of some of my favourite bob updos that I think are going to be big this season.
These ideas are elegant and easy and I have included several of my favourites, from casual everyday hairstyles to more formal updos for those big occasions. These updos are so elegant, I think it might be time to finally call my stylist…
11 Best Updo Hairstyles for Bobs
1. Low Bun

First up is a straight up classic. This is a hairdo you can’t go wrong with. Always looks classy and works beautifully to style a bob. Just separate your hair down the middle and pull it back into a low bun at the nape of your neck. My advice is? To avoid damage to the hair, re-tie your bob back in place with a silk scrunchie.
2. Half-Up Half-Down

If you’re looking for something a bit more casual, why not try this half-up, half-down hairstyle? I adore this look because you get the best of both worlds. There are several ways to do this, but my fave is to use a little claw clip to pin the hair back at the back. Again I like to part my hair down the middle, then take the top bit of hair and separate it with my fingers and pin this in place. I don’t try to have super tidy finish, I favour a more laid-back look.
3. Claw Clip

Speaking about claw clips, a bigger size is perfect to keep your bob in a sleek and straightforward updo. I can copy this look in seconds and constantly get compliments on it.
4. Twist à la Française

This design is a little more involved than the above, but it’s excellent for a dressy clothing or a special occasion. You would believe that you need long hair to have this look but as you can see even a bob hairstyle looks great with a French twist. Just wrap the hair around your finger and work your way up, pinning it into place with a huge pin.
5. Pigtails

Elsa Hosk shows that ponytails aren’t exclusively for long hair Try a slicked back shorter ponytail for your bob for a chicer finish, leaving some hair loose around your face.
6. Little Braid

Hailey Bieber’s bob is so lovely when fashioned into a little plait! If you ask me, the ultimate summer look.
7. Slicked-back hair bun

Another classic updo for the bob hairstyle is a slicked-back bun. This style is perfect for in between hair wash days and always appears sleek and polished.
8. French Pin

Okay, so this is not quite an updo, as you can still wear your hair down, but it’s a super elegant way to get your hair out of your face. For a chic touch to your outfit, use a French pin to bind any stray hairs.
9. Simple Bun

If a tight slicked back bun is too formal, then this more laid back look is the way to go. The secret is to let some of the strands come down a little looser to give your updo that carefree look.
10. Strands to frame the face

And while I love a basic half-up half-down, I also enjoy it when individuals add some face-framing tendrils to the look. You may even use a little curling wand to give modest movement all over these face-framing strands.
11. Bangs and Low Bun

Last but not least we all know how wonderful bangs can look with a bob hairstyle and the good news is they look just as trendy with an updo. The secret here is to tie your hair back in a bun so the bangs can do the talking.
