I have to admit—after spending most of my life as a brunette, I’m starting to feel a little envious lately. Why? Because blonde hair is absolutely having a major moment right now. Not only is it one of the hottest hair colours of the summer, but it’s also shaping up to be one of the biggest overall hair trends of the year.
Just look at Bella Hadid, who recently debuted a stunning honey-blonde transformation at the Cannes Film Festival. Closer to home, my Instagram feed has been flooded with celebrities and influencers embracing everything from mocha bronde to soft worn-blonde shades. Even Who What Wear UK’s junior beauty editor Grace Lindsay recently switched to a butterscotch blonde tone, proving that lighter hair is officially dominating summer 2025.
While I still haven’t booked a salon appointment myself, I’ve found another blonde trend that’s quickly becoming impossible to ignore. Lately, bright yet effortless “California blonde” has completely taken over my social feeds, and I have a feeling this hair colour is only going to grow bigger as summer continues. So, what exactly is California blonde hair? To find out, I spoke with Laura Elliot, head educator and stylist at Neal & Wolf.
What Is “California Blonde” Hair?
According to Elliot, California blonde is a bright, summery blonde shade created using multiple tones to mimic the natural hues you’d see along a California beach.
“It’s sun-kissed with a soft, lived-in root blend that makes it look as though your hair has naturally lightened during a sunny holiday,” she explains. “As temperatures rise and beach-inspired beauty takes over social media, this colour becomes even more desirable because the blend of tones looks beautiful with beach waves and voluminous blow-dries.”
Unlike flat blonde shades, California blonde focuses on softness, movement, and dimension, giving hair a natural yet elevated finish.
How Do You Achieve California Blonde Hair?
Elliot explains that creating the perfect California blonde look involves brightening the areas of hair that naturally lighten in the sun, such as around the face and along the top layers of the hair.
Since the trend combines both warm and cool blonde tones, achieving the perfect balance requires professional expertise. Elliot recommends speaking with your colourist to find the best tones to complement your skin tone and create the most natural-looking result possible.
Blending is also key. The roots should melt seamlessly into the lighter lengths to maintain that effortless, sun-kissed appearance.
The goal is to make it look like you’ve just spent a month relaxing on the beaches of Malibu—not just a few hours sitting in a salon chair. Because of that, spending time discussing inspiration photos and your desired finish with your stylist can make all the difference.
