Sky Monroe did not grow up eating plant-based meals. She describes her younger self as a regular visitor to drive-thru restaurants, with a particular love for cheese fries and sugary lattes. However, her outlook on food changed completely after her father suffered a heart attack while still in his 50s.
“I saw how quickly things could change,” Sky says. “I didn’t want to wait for my own warning sign before taking my health seriously.”
Her Transition to a Vegan Lifestyle
Sky began by removing red meat and dairy products from her diet. She did not make every change at once. Instead, she gradually adjusted her eating habits until she was following a fully vegan lifestyle.
Although her main meals were becoming healthier, she soon noticed that her snacking choices had not improved. She was still reaching for packets of crisps, sugary granola bars and other highly processed foods whenever she felt hungry between meals.
“My meals were healthier, but I was still choosing snacks that didn’t support what I was trying to achieve,” she admits.
Choosing Snacks That Supported Her Heart
Sky decided that protecting her heart required more than changing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her everyday snacks also needed to support her health rather than work against it.
She started making simple snacks at home using ingredients commonly associated with a balanced, heart-conscious diet. Oats, flaxseed, almonds and dark-coloured berries became regular items in her kitchen.
“I wasn’t trying to turn every snack into a healthy version of dessert,” she explains. “I simply wanted food that gave me energy and left me feeling good afterwards.”
How Her Cravings Changed Over Time
As Sky continued with her new routine, her body gradually adapted. Her taste preferences also began to change. The intense cravings for processed snacks and sudden sugar highs became less frequent.
Instead, simple combinations such as sliced apples with almond butter or a handful of roasted chickpeas became enough to keep her satisfied. These snacks helped her feel more balanced and reduced the urge to reach for heavily processed alternatives.
“Snacking became part of my heart-health routine instead of something that made me feel guilty,” Sky says.
Helping Others Make Smaller Healthier Choices
Sky now shares easy snack ideas and straightforward recipes on her blog. Through her content, she encourages people to focus on realistic daily improvements rather than attempting to change their entire lifestyle overnight.
Her message is that healthier eating does not have to begin with a strict or complicated plan. A single better choice, repeated consistently, can become the foundation of a lasting routine.
“You don’t need to overhaul your whole life overnight,” she says. “Just start with the snack in your hand.”
