Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone era, and it has done so with one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years. The new iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, combining a compact everyday phone with a massive 7.6-inch display that opens up when users want more screen space.
For longtime iPhone users, this is not simply another yearly upgrade. The iPhone Duo introduces an entirely different way to use an iPhone.
A 7.6-Inch iPhone That Still Fits in Your Pocket
The biggest attraction is clearly the display.
When folded, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, making it relatively compact for everyday tasks such as messaging, calls, maps and social media.
Open the phone, however, and users get a huge 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display designed for watching videos, gaming, reading, editing and running multiple apps. Apple says the inner screen is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both displays also feature ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple has added a nano-texture finish to the folding display to reduce reflections while also making the crease less noticeable.
Apple Has Redesigned the iPhone Experience
A foldable screen would mean little without software built to take advantage of it.
The iPhone Duo runs a reworked iOS experience that can transition between its outer and inner displays. The larger screen makes multitasking more useful, allowing users to work with more content without carrying a separate tablet.
Apple is even bringing Apple Pencil support to the iPhone Duo later this year, allowing users to sketch, take notes and mark up documents directly on either display.
Interestingly, Apple has also changed how users unlock the phone. Instead of relying on Face ID, the iPhone Duo features Touch ID integrated into the side button, making authentication easier regardless of whether the device is folded or open.
Powerful Hardware Inside the Foldable Design
Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with its A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor-chamber cooling system and a dual-battery architecture.
That additional power becomes important when users start gaming, multitasking or running AI-powered features across the larger display.
Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours when using the outer display. Fast charging can take the battery to around 50% in approximately 20 minutes with a compatible wired charger.
Durability has also received serious attention. The phone uses a Grade 5 titanium structure, Ceramic Shield protection and an engineered hinge made from more than 100 components. It also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
iPhone Duo Could Be Apple’s Biggest iPhone Shift in Years
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, with storage options ranging from 256GB all the way to 2TB. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on October 16, followed by availability from October 23, 2026 in more than 70 countries and regions.
It is undeniably expensive, but the iPhone Duo is about more than price or specifications. It represents Apple taking the familiar iPhone formula and turning it into something completely different.
After years of traditional slab-style iPhones, the Duo gives Apple users something genuinely new: a pocket-sized iPhone when closed and an almost tablet-like experience when opened.
And that could make the iPhone Duo one of the most important Apple products of this generation.
